New Date July 9th for “Bee-Cology” Workshop: Field Identification of Massachusetts Bumblebees
July 9, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Metacomet Land Trust will sponsor a field workshop in the identification of native Bumblebees on Saturday, July 9th in Uxbridge. The date for this event has been postponed two weeks due to the unusual timing of flowers on which Bumblebees depend.
Dr. Robert Gegear, of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, will train citizen scientists to recognize the individual species of bumblebees and explain how to report sightings to the “Bee-Cology” research project at WPI.
This workshop will take place at a privately owned conservation property in Uxbridge and space is limited to about 30 participants. Please pre-register by emailing Metacomet at MetacometLT@gmail.com. Directions will be given once registered. In the case of rain, participants will be notified.
There are several different bumblebees in the region and Dr. Gegear is studying which species are adapting to changes in their habitat and which species seem to be less able to adapt to change. Dr. Gegear’s graduate students and volunteers observe and photograph bumblebees as they visit flowering plants to gather nectar and pollen. PLEASE BRING YOUR SMART PHONE OR OTHER GOOD QUALITY DIGITAL CAMERA.
Young adults 14 and up are welcome.
