Spring Woodcock Walk
April 18 @ 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm
Join us for one of the iconic US birding experiences: to hear the American Woodcock in spring! (Yes, spring will come!)
American Woodcocks spend most of their time on the ground in brushy, young-forest habitats, but in spring the male Woodcock engages in a unique courtship flight each evening at dusk. The male American Woodcock gives repeated “peents” on the ground. After a time he flies upward in a wide spiral. As he gets higher, his wings start to twitter. After reaching a height of 70-100 m the twittering becomes intermittent, and the bird starts chirping as he starts to descend in a zig-zag, diving fashion, chirping as he goes.
Come join MLT Board member Mike Penko at Stefans Farm Open Space in Upton on Wednesday, April 18th at 6:45 pm. We will watch and listen for Upton’s resident American Woodcocks.
Meet in the Stefans Farm Open Space parking area by the Community Garden and near the power lines. Setting your GPS to 100 Mechanic Street in Upton will bring you close to the parking area. .
This will not require much walking, we will remain close to the parking area or perhaps walk to a nearby field. Ticks are out so insect repellent is recommended. Heavy rain cancels.
